    This was an excellent debate. I wish I had an example like this to watch when I was in debating class at school. I would have gotten better marks. It was tough topic handled in a professional and thoughtful manner. Personal opinions aside, this debate does what a debate ought to… promote thinking about an opposite viewpoint.

    Graeme keeps a straight face when lying about the bible, 43:09 Joseph didn't marry his sister. Asenath is an Egyptian woman, she is the daugther of Potiphera how is that his sister? It is sad to see someone lost in what should be saving them. May he find God in his quest to embrace/love the world.

    • @ameladu
      @ameladu 22 дні тому

      Giving him the benefit of the doubt, he simply may have misspoken. I believe what he is referring to is the recorded Jewish oral history in the Talmund, which does state that Asenath is the daughter of Dinah, Dinah who is his half-sister, and daughter of Potiphera priest of On. Regardless of the truth on that matter, she's definitely not the daughter of the Pharoah, friend. So I'll offer you the same benefit of the doubt and assume you know and meant to say that Asenath is biblically recorded as being the daughter of Potiphera, not Pharoah.

    • @graemecodrington
      @graemecodrington 14 днів тому

      Hi there. There's no need to give me the benefit of the doubt. There is just the need to do some more reading beyond what you were taught at Sunday School. And also to listen to what I said, when I said "In the Jewish tradition...". In Jewish tradition, Osnath (Asenath in English translations of the Bible) is considered to be the wife of Joseph, the son of Jacob. According to the Book of Genesis, she was the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On (Heliopolis). However, there is an additional layer to her story found in Jewish midrashic texts which state that Osnath was actually the daughter of Dinah, Jacob’s daughter, conceived as a result of her rape by Shechem. Dinah's father, Jacob, supposedly placed a medallion around Osnath's neck and sent her away to protect her. She was eventually adopted by Potiphera and raised in Egypt. When Joseph saw the medallion bearing the name of God, which he recognized as a sign of her lineage, he accepted her as his wife, thus she was not an Egyptian by birth according to this tradition but was of Hebrew descent. This midrashic account is seen as a way to maintain the purity of Joseph’s lineage by marrying within his broader family, in line with the narratives of other patriarchs marrying their kin. Having said all that, if this one moment in the presentation was your excuse to throw out everything I said, you really are trying to dance on the head of a pin, aren't you?

      @@ameladu You are right I just made a typing error I have updated it. . . on the other hand he Graeme is taking us on a which hunt to go and read something which is not in the bible... if that is the case he is technically saying the bible is lying about Asenath, which I would rather take what is in the bible rather than his opinion.

    • @thecoworker9099
      @thecoworker9099 14 днів тому

      @@graemecodrington In other words, are you saying the bible is wrong in saying Asenath was the daughter of Potiphera? what are the chances that Jewish midrashic texts are referring to a different person? You are the one dancing on the head of a pin with your argument that is based on your preference. The bible teaches us to go and preach the gospel and we use the bible to do so... not midrashic texts which are just comments not the actual scripts... You also fail to mention other midrashic that tells a different story about Asenath, to show that you are only interested in what makes your point.

    • @graemecodrington
      @graemecodrington 8 днів тому

      @@thecoworker9099 The Jewish commentators are doing what all Biblical commentators do - making sense of the text. I am not saying they're right nor wrong, nor attempting to explain their interpretation (look it up if you're interested). All I am saying is that the witness of the people who take the Bible seriously shows that these issues are not as simple as a Sunday School level reading of modern English translations suggests. But again, I say, if you've listened to the whole debate and this is your major point of concern, you've both missed the point entirely and given me the "win" - this is such a minor point in the broader argument I was making, I assume that the rest was compelling for you... (that would be foolish, I know, but maybe you can do better in critiquing me then).

      Let me guess, @RobertRobert7924, you're a white man. Am I right? As a white man, you don't feel the need to be specifically recognised, nor understand the implications of representation - because (like me) your competence is assumed, and you are "recognised" whenever you enter a room. This is not because of what we have done, but merely because of who we are. People who are black, or women, or a minority, or disabled, or LGBTQI, have not had this same privilege, and so these days are there to remind us to "see" and "recognise" them more. The best world will be a world where we don't need to do this specially anymore, because it is just done normally. We don't live in that world yet, so we celebrate them this way. That's my view.
